Allergens and intolerances in food can be particularly important for children, as they can be even more sensitive to certain substances. Here is a brief explanation of allergens in children in relation to food:
What are allergens?:
Allergens are proteins in food that can trigger an allergic reaction in the immune system. In children, allergens in food can cause symptoms such as skin rashes, breathing difficulties, gastrointestinal complaints and even life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Common food allergens:
The most common food allergens include dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish and seafood. These foods should be avoided in children with confirmed allergies.
What are intolerances?:
Intolerances are reactions to certain foods or ingredients that do not affect the immune system. Instead, they are often due to problems with digestion or metabolism. However, they can also cause unpleasant symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea and flatulence.
If your child has intolerances, these can be selected on this page in the form of allergens.
These will then be taken into account when selecting meals and a warning will appear if you select a meal with an existing intolerance.
It may happen that a certificate from the caterer for allergens and intolerances is required for special protection and assessment of a special diet. In this case, please submit the certificate to the school office. From there, it will then be forwarded to the responsible departments in compliance with data protection.
